Graphing Social Patterns Roundup

Spending 2 days locked away in a conference room when the weather outside is stunning is always going to be tough, lucky for Graphing Social Patterns that they had the agenda and quality of speakers to compete. The conference has been coverered extensivly on the blogs and here are some links to the highlights. Charlene Li gave the opening keynote at Graphing Social Patterns conference. The keynote was titled “The Future of Social Networks” For a recap of the two days  ReadWriteWeb  It was a good mix of business, marketing and technical discussion and had pretty even representation. That said one key trend is that the developers are launching social and viral applications with unprecedented ease  and speed, and learning in real time the dynamics of the business. There was significant discussion about monetization, an in one panel of 4 start ups (none older than 9 months old)  all of them were profitable. It was also evident that the big brands and advertisers are seeing the value of viral and social aspects of the campaigns they can now run. Some of the agency folks talked about applications costing anywhere for $5K to $$150K (although on the IRC back channel there was significant astonishment at the high end number) .

Push versus Pull

I’m noticing a trend where folks comment on my plaxo pulse stream – and not on here on the blog. Not that I get many comments at all but I’d like them to be in one place if they can be and support and invigorate an ongoing conversation. I think it must be that more people are adding the plaxo pulse and then get a weekly activity update with all their networks updates.

Out at Graphing Social Patterns I had a chance to talk to Joseph Smarr of Plaxo about this and he explained how difficult it was to know how to get the comments back onto my blog. If we had a good suggestion though he’d like to hear it as he has had the topic raised a number of times. My thought is to have a badge on the the blog, but thats a bit of a compromise.

Off to Graphing Social Patterns in San Diego

February 25, 2008 Craig Dwyer Leave a comment

Great timing – I’m looking at social networks from a strategy and investment model more and more these days and this 2 day conference at the start of Etech looks just the ticket. Throw in a handful of airmiles, some old pals in SD and hey presto, I’m off on Friday to LA and then drive down the San Diego over the weekend.
